Welcome to the Ironman & Wife blog! I’m sure you have a lot of questions, so let’s get them out of the way now.
Wait, what is this? How did I end up at this website? I was just trying to remember who plays Ironman’s wife in the movies.
First of all – they aren’t married. You’re probably thinking of Pepper Potts, portrayed by Gwyneth Paltrow in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. In fact, Pepper marries Happy in the comic books (Jon Favreau in the films), not Tony Stark.
Thanks for the clarification. But now that I’m here… what is this website about? It’s clearly not about the Ironman superhero.
Glad you asked! This website is a blog that will document the journey to my first Ironman Triathlon: IRONMAN Florida 2016, from both my perspective and my wife’s perspective. Being newlyweds is difficult enough for most couples, so training for an Ironman on top of that is going to be quite the experience. It’s going to be a lot of work for me, and probably more work for my wife to keep my spirits up, take the larger bulk of household responsibilities, and do most of the dog walking, all while staying focused on her new job.
Oh, ok. Who are you, anyway?
Hi, I’m Robbie. My wife is Sarah. Check out the About Us section. I promise it will only mildly disappoint you.
Why are you doing an Ironman? Isn’t that a lot of work?
It is! I’m doing it because I actually really enjoy the sport, I want to challenge myself, and it’s probably now or never 20 years from now (I can’t imagine trying to do this with children in the picture with Sarah and I keeping our full-time jobs).
So that’s cool. But why are you starting a blog? What is this, 2005?
It may not be 2005, but we’re starting a blog anyway! This is still a pretty good forum to catalog our experiences leading up to my first Ironman race. We’ll share the good times and the hard times, and hopefully people can learn from our experiences in the future.
Really? That’s why you’re starting a blog?
Yes! Really! And to give shout-outs to those who help along the way. It’s going to take a team to get me to the finish line.
How often will you post?
Hmm, probably once or twice a week. An Ironwife post one week, an Ironman post the next week? I don’t know. I’d like to post more than that – I enjoy writing and I’m going to have a lot to say. But… it’s going to be a busy year. Between increased job responsibilities (for both of us), our energetic puppy, a few weddings to attend, season tickets to Disney World, and a 2-week trip to France this summer, I might do some triathlon training.
Wow, good for you [rolling of eyes]. So what will you post about?
Haven’t we talked about this already?
No, asshole. More specifically. Like are you just going to post your bike splits while your wife complains about how little you do around the house?
No! There’s going to be a lot more than just that! Nothing set in stone yet, but I have a few ideas for me: updates on my training, race recaps, reviews on the equipment I’m using, workout playlist suggestions, and more! As for Sarah, I know she’s thinking of posting some travel tips and helpful recipes. Plus she’s cooking up a few other ideas.
Oh yes. There’s more where that came from.
That meme hasn’t been funny for a while now.
I know.
Will all of your posts be this annoying and self-deprecating?
I sure hope so! If things get too serious, then I’m not having fun anymore, and then what’s the point?
I don’t know, it’s your blog. I’m done asking questions. That was infuriating.
Well thanks(?) hypothetical reader! I’m just getting starting. Honestly, I want to say that I know what I’m getting into, but I probably don’t. It’s going to be an extremely difficult, busy year. So join us for the ride. Please leave any advice you have in any of the comments sections. I’d really appreciate it! And if you have any real questions, feel free to post them in the comments as well. Maybe I’ll even answer some of them.
Your future Ironman,
Robbie
